The architecture
How deletion works
Every chat has a MongoDB TTL index on its expires_at field. When the timer runs out, MongoDB drops the document. Not a cron job. Not application code. A database-level guarantee that doesn't depend on our servers being healthy.
You pick the timer: 8 hours (default), 7 days, or 30 days. Each chat is independent. Deletion is a hard cascade -- PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, S3 media. Permanently unrecoverable.
How encryption works
Encrypted in transit and at rest. The memory platform is fail-closed -- it refuses to run without its key.
Every Knowledgebook entry is encrypted with your own key. Revision history is encrypted and dies with the book.
What we don't do
Train on your data
Claude runs on AWS Bedrock. Bedrock's terms prohibit training on customer data. Ask Safely adds a second no-training commitment on top.
Track you
No ads, no retargeting, no ad profiles. No ATT prompt, so no IDFA. Our install attribution partner receives an app-scoped vendor ID and, where the platform provides one, the device advertising ID. No location, contacts, or photos. No email open/click tracking.
Sell your data
No ads. No data brokers. We don’t sell your data. We use a short list of service providers to run the product, each listed in our privacy policy.
Keep deleted chats
Deleted from your history on the schedule you set. We keep as little as possible everywhere else.
What we do collect
Account info (email, hashed password). Plausible for privacy-focused web analytics (no cookies, no personal data). Adjust for mobile install attribution (we know which ad brought you, not what you did after). RevenueCat for payments. That's the complete list.
Where we're not done yet
SOC 2 certification is in progress via Vanta. Expected early 2027. We don't have it yet and we won't claim we do. We don't offer a BAA. HIPAA-compliant AI requires a signed BAA, and we're not there. We have under a thousand monthly active users. We're a small team in Minneapolis.
We mention this because everyone else buries it. If a company tells you they're private but won't tell you what's missing, that's the thing to worry about.

What does "no AI model training" mean?
When you chat with tools like ChatGPT, your conversations can be used to improve their AI by default. Your words, your business ideas, your personal details become part of the training data for future models. Ask Safely never does this. The AI models are already trained before they reach you. Nothing you type ever goes back into making the AI smarter or shaping what it tells someone else. Your conversations stay yours.
How does Ask Safely protect my data?
Your chats auto-delete on a timer you choose, 8 hours by default. When a chat clears, it's gone from your history. Everything is encrypted in transit and at rest, and never used for training. Your password is protected with one-way hashing, so even we can't read it.
What is Ask Safely's SOC 2 status?
Ask Safely is undergoing a SOC 2 Type 2 audit, run continuously through an independent compliance platform. We expect the report in 2026 and will share our current status on request.
Why not just use Claude directly?
You can. Claude is great. Ask Safely adds three things on top. The privacy layer: chats that clear on a timer you choose, encryption in transit and at rest, and no data training. The simplicity layer: automatic model selection, auto-triggering web search, and guided prompts. And Knowledgebooks: a record of what you know that you own and control. Claude gives you the raw AI. Why should I trust a startup with my data?
Because our business depends on it. We make money from subscriptions. If we broke your privacy, we'd lose our only reason to exist.
